With over 20 years of experience in venture capital, Mr. Peter Liu is widely regarded as a pioneer of venture capitalists in Asia. Born in Beijing and raised in Taipei, Peter was educated in the United States. Prior to founding WI Harper Group, Peter was a general partner of Walden International Asia where he established joint venture partnerships with several Asian governments and leading enterprises and helped raise US$400 million, including its China Walden Fund. He has rich experience in investing in and advising high-tech companies throughout the United States and Asia, and has a track record of securing significant capital appreciation for investors.
In 1985, Peter co-founded Walden International, currently a firm with US$1.7 billion under management. Peter has personally invested in over 100 high tech companies in Greater China and has a proven track record of creating value for LPs. His investments include DivX, Creative Technology, CommerceOne, Intraware, S3, ISSI and many other publicly listed companies.
Peter holds several directorships including Committee of 100, The 1990 Institute and the San Francisco and Shanghai Sister City Committee. He is also a founder of Monte Jade Association and an Honorary Board Member of Hua Yuan Science and Technology Association. Additionally, Peter co-founded the Taipei Venture Capital Association in Taiwan and also serves as a director of the Korea Restructuring Fund. He is also the recipient of Asia Pacific Leadership Award presented by the University of San Francisco Center for the Pacific Rim.
With over 20 years experience in investment and technology fields, YK oversees WI Harper's venture capital business in Taiwan. Before assuming his present position, YK served as President at Sasson International of MTI Group, and was responsible for new ventures development investment in communications industries. Prior to joining Sasson, YK was the Funding Partner of Taiwan Cellular Corp., and General Manager of Iridium Taiwan Gateway's construction, system development for business operation and territory market access covering Taiwan, Philippines, Indonesia, Brunei, and Papua New Guinea. YK also held the positions of Vice President of Walden International Investment Group, Director of Taiwan Aerospace Corporation, and Vice President of Dynatech Taiwan Corporation.
YK holds an M.E. degree in Aeronautics and Astronautics from University of Washington, an M.S. in Mechanical Engineering from Drexel University, and a B.S. in Mechanical Engineering from National Cheng-Kung University in Taiwan.
Jimmy Lu is the Managing Director of the WI Harper Group. Jimmy oversees WI Harper’s global operations and brings to the firm over 20 years of high technology and venture capital experience. He currently serves on the boards of CNano Technology Limited, China Diagnostics Medical Corporation, Kindstar Global Co. and StemCyte Inc.
Prior to joining WI Harper, Jimmy co-founded and was a General Partner of iD Ventures America (formerly Acer Technology Ventures), which manages numerous funds, including Acer Technology Venture Fund and IP Fund One. The funds were early investors in iRobot Corporation (NASDAQ: IRBT), Harmonix Music (creators of the Guitar Hero and Rock Band franchises, acquired by MTV/Viacom; NYSE: VIA), ArtX Inc. (acquired by ATI Technologies; NYSE: AMD), Allayer Communications (acquired by Broadcom; NASDAQ: BRCM), Monolithic Power Systems (NASDAQ: MPWR) and Fortinet (NASDAQ: FTNT).
Jimmy joined the Acer Group, a leading worldwide technology company, in 1992, and as General Counsel worked closely with senior management to negotiate and structure the Acer Group’s international joint ventures, strategic alliances, acquisitions, global financings and commercial transactions. He assisted in establishing Acer’s first international venture capital fund, Fund 21 Limited. Before joining Acer, he was with Bingham McCutchen in San Francisco, specializing in M&A and venture transactions, debt and equity financings and public securities work. He also spent several years as a banker with JP Morgan in New York City. Jimmy looks back fondly to when he was first introduced to entrepreneurship and venture investing as the director of a community outreach program, sponsored by the Federal Reserve Bank of Boston, that trained disadvantaged high school students from South Boston High how to operate their own small business.
Jimmy has been a panelist or speaker at many conferences sponsored by international business and legal organizations and has also guest lectured and presented at Yale, Harvard, Stanford and Wharton.
Jimmy earned a B.A. from Yale College, an M.B.A. from Harvard Business School and a J.D. from UC Berkeley School of Law (Boalt Hall). He is currently the Chair of the Association of Yale Alumni and an Associate Fellow of Trumbull College. He is also a member of the University of Florida College of Engineering West Coast Advisory Board.
With over 18 years of private equity, consulting, and technical experience, Paul oversees venture capital investments and the management of WI Harper's information technology sector in the U.S. Prior to joining WI Harper, Paul served as Vice President at Walden International and handled investments and the management of existing portfolio companies. He also served as Vice President at GIC Special Investment Private Ltd (Government of Singapore Investment Corporation), where he oversaw direct private equity and fund investments in the United States. Before joining GIC, Paul was a Senior Consultant with BARRA, a financial consulting company for pension funds and money management firms. He served as a member of the Board of Directors at DivX (NASDAQ:DIVX), USI Insurance Corporation (NASDAQ:USIH), LogicEase ( acquired by NYSE: CLGX) and presently holds several directorships in various technology companies. Within WI Harper, Paul is responsible for investments in Ultriva, Cnano, GCT Semiconductor and Maxic Technology.
Paul holds an M.B.A. from University of California, Berkeley and a B.S. in Electrical Engineering from University of Canterbury.
Mr.Shahi Ghanem is the Managing Director in San Francisco office.
Shahi is a technology industry veteran, serial entrepreneur, angel investor and venture capital investor and advisor that has raised over one hundred million dollars in capital and helped create over one billion dollars in shareholder returns. With deep experience in digital media, social media, Internet advertising, consumer electronics, and distributed technologies, he has worked with dozens of early-stage companies in director, advisor, and executive roles. He is also a successful executive mentor and featured speaker on media and technology.
Prior to joining WI Harper, Shahi served as the Chief Strategy Officer and Executive Vice President of Corporate Development for BitTorrent, Inc., a leading distributed technology company. Prior roles have included:
• President of DivX, one of the world's leading developers of video compression, digital rights management, and related media technologies.
• Chairman and CEO of Brickfish, an Internet advertising and social media company that delivers consumer-driven social media campaigns and metrics to Global 2000 clients in the fashion, sports, electronics, and consumer products industries.
• CEO of EmpowHER, a health media company and leading social media site dedicated to female health and wellness.
Acting CEO of STL, an enterprise software company dedicated to helping Fortune 500 companies manage, distribute and measure digital assets.
• SVP of Technology for Greens.com, a pioneering provider of business solutions for the golf industry.
Shahi was educated at Cal State Long Beach and the University of California at Irvine, majoring in both economics and pre-med while competing as an NCAA All American Division I athlete.
Sean Peng is a Managing Director of the Beijing office where he leads WI Harper's China operations and oversees investment opportunities in China. Sean has over 20 years of experience in the high technology industry, direct investment, and fund management in the Greater China and the U.S.
Prior to joining WI Harper, Sean was a Managing Director at H&Q Asia Pacific where he was responsible for direct investments in the Greater China region. Before joining H&QAP in 2002, Sean was a Senior Vice President of Fortune Venture Investment Group where he was responsible for venture capital investments in the U.S. and the Greater China. Sean also served as the President of Golden Technology Venture Investment Corp. and Emerging Technology Venture Investment Corp. Prior to joining Fortune Venture Management Group in 1996, Sean was with LSI Logic Corporation for seven years as a R&D engineer in the U.S. and a Marketing Manager in the Asia Pacific.
His investments include Spreadtrum communication (NASDAQ : SPRD), Monolithic Power System(NASDAQ: MPWR), OmniVision(NASDAQ: OVTI), NetIQ(NASDAQ : NTIQ), Semiconductor Manufacturing International Corporation(NYSE: SMI), Axiomtek (TSE:3088), Sintronic Technology(TSE:3536), Wistron(TSE:3231), Everfocus(TSE:5484), Arima Communication(TSE:8101), and many other public companies.
Sean received his EMBA from Peking University, his MBA from Santa Clara University in California，and his Master in Electrical Engineering from University of Texas at Austin.
Charles is an accomplished and inspiring senior executive with over 30 years of extensive experience in general management, technology, investment, innovation, and global business. Prior to joining W.I. Harper Group, Charles served as Vice President and Managing Director, IBM Corporation, where he led the development of transformational strategies across multiple business lines and Managing Partner of IBM China Investment Fund, where he made several highly successful direct and fund-of-funds investments. Charles previously held a series of executive positions in software and e-Business at IBM. Before he was appointed General Manager of IBM East and Central China in 1994, Charles was a member of the IBM executive team in the U.S. that founded business consulting and IT outsourcing services. He started his career with IBM as a systems engineer.
Charles is actively involved in civic and community activities. He served as Senior Advisor to City of Shenyang Foreign Trade and Economic Cooperation, Executive Board Member of E-Commerce China Forum, Committee Member of City of Shanghai e-Commerce Committee, Chairman of The American Chamber of Commerce in Shanghai, Vice Chairman of the Board of Trustees, International School of Beijing, and Executive Advisor to United Way of Greater Houston. He is a mentor/coach to founders/CEOs of start-ups sponsored by Asian American MultiTechnology Association in Beijing.
He holds a Bachelor of Business Administration degree in Finance from the University of Houston. He also completed Harvard Business School Executive Education on Venture Capital & Private Equity and Wharton Business School Executive Education on Joint Ventures.
Yigong Wang is the Chief Operating Officer of WI Harper’s Beijing Office where he is responsible for daily operations. Prior to joining WI Harper, Yigong spent 19 years at China Ocean Shipping (Group) Company (COSCO), where he served as the Deputy Director of R&D Center. While he was with COSCO, he also served as Deputy General Manager of the Ship-building & Trading Department, Director of Technology Center, and member of various committees. Prior to COSCO, Yigong worked at the Department of Ocean Engineering and Naval Architecture at Tianjin University.
Yigong holds a Ph.D. in Mechanical Engineering from the Brunel University in UK and Masters degree in Engineering from Tianjin University.
Edward Liu is Partner at WI Harper Group. He has sourced investments in Synthego, Yes Health, Qualaroo, Cold Genesys, Pandai, Xola, Bounce.io and currently represents WI Harper on the board of Admaster, Pandai and Health2Sync. Edward is also actively involved in WI Harper’s seed initiatives and fundraising activities.
Prior to joining WI Harper, Edward was Head of China Operations at The Piacente Group, a full service investor relations and financial communications consulting firm. Previously, he worked as Director of Investor Relations at Xinhua Finance (TSE:9399), a diversified financial services company based in Shanghai and Beijing. Prior to that, Edward was the Director of Investor Relations & Corporate Development at Linktone Ltd (NSDQ:LTON), a leading provider of wireless interactive entertainment products and services in China. He has also worked as a Credit Analyst and Associate at Silicon Valley Bank (NSDQ:SIVB) in Santa Clara, California, where he co-managed a $100m portfolio of venture backed, early stage technology and life science companies and consulted on financing structures, compliance, and banking services.
Edward has many years of experience in deal structure and strategy, risk management, commercial banking, and investor relations. He graduated with a bachelor degree in Finance and Marketing from University of San Diego, and has an MBA with honors from Shanghai Jiao Tong University. Edward is also a member of Citi Private Bank’s NextGen class of 2011 and donate regularly to his favorite charity, The Nature Conservancy.
Jeffrey Chu is part of the TMT investment team focusing on Asia and US investments. Prior to joining WI Harper, Jeffrey was an Investment Manager at Keytone Ventures, a venture capital firm based in Beijing where he was responsible for early to growth stage TMT investments (PapayaMobile, ChinaPnR, Borqs and MobilePeak).
Prior to that, he worked as an Investment Banking Associate at China eCapital, a domestic investment bank focused on media, healthcare, and consumer services. Mr. Chu began his career at Bear Stearns as a financial analyst covering global capital markets.
Jeffrey graduated with a dual degree in Finance and International Business from New York University's Stern School of Business.
Johnson Lin is an Investment Analyst with over 10 years of experience focusing on the Consumer and Healthcare industries globally.
In 2012, Johnson moved to Hong Kong with Myriad Asset Management, and later Pinyin Capital, where he managed the Greater Asia Consumer/Healthcare book, effectively balancing his skills as an investment analyst, portfolio manager, and risk-taker. Notably in the private Healthcare space, Johnson was directly involved in the successful capital raise for Singapore-based biotech companies TauRx Therapeutics and Aslan Pharmaceuticals. He has since made further impactful strides in the Greater Asia Consumer, and Healthcare sectors.
A graduate of the London School of Economics & Political Science, Johnson started in finance as an Equity Research Analyst with Goldman Sachs in London, and went on to join the international hedge fund Marshall Wace Asset Management.
Yvonne has over 18 years of experience in international wireless & telecommunications industry and corporate investments. Before joining WI Harper, she worked for leading smartphone maker hTC spearheading their direct investment division, which includes corporate investments, business development, and acquisition management.
Yvonne began her professional life as system engineer for Taiwanese satellite communications pioneer Microelectronics Technology Inc. (MTI); later as Account Manager, she was stationed in the Silicon Valley to support MTI’s largest customer DMC. Yvonne returned to Taiwan in 2000 and started her career in venture capital, working under former Finance Deputy Minister Yang Zi-jiang at CDIB & Partners Investment, with a focus on wireless and telecommunications investments in Silicon Valley, San Diego, and Taiwan. In 2002 she was invited to join H&Q AP, where she continued to focus on early stage investments but expanded her scope to mobile, security and software in Silicon Valley, Taiwan, and France.
Yvonne has a Bachelor in Computer Science from Tamkang University in Taiwan, an M.S. in Telecommunications from the University of Pittsburgh, and received her EMBA from the National Chengchi University in 2007. She is a Director for the Chinese Alternative Energy Association, Founding President for the Taiwan Chapter of the University of Pittsburgh Alumni Association, and was executive secretary for Zonta, an international organization for professional women. Yvonne has also been invited to act as mentor and judge for NTU Start-up and other entrepreneurial competitions.
Dr. Yong Liu is a Partner of WI Harper Group. Previously he was head of Lenovo and Baidu open innovation efforts in the US, including strategic investment and partnerships. He served as a key contributor in several cross-border M&A deals including Lenovo-Moto acquisition. He also co-founded Lenovo LeFund in 2010, which is one of the most influential Chinese corporate VC funds today. Currently he invests in early stage tech startups and accelerates their growth through strong and unique strategic resources in both China and US.
In his earlier career Dr. Liu served Samsung Electronics SV R&D center, co-founded Dict.cn, and was an active business writer. He authored 40+ business review articles, 20+ academic papers, and 10 US/China patents. He sits on the review committee/advisory board of multiple government funds/entrepreneurial organizations in China and US. Dr. Liu holds a B.S. and a M.S. in Computer Science from Nanjing University, and a Ph.D. in Computer Science from Indiana University Bloomington. Currently he is VP and board member of Nanjing University Alumni Association San Francisco and Bay Area.
Winnie handles investments within the information technology fields, particularly in the communications/wireless, digital media, and software & new technology applications industries. In addition to investment activities, Winnie is actively involved in portfolio management and works with our portfolio companies closely in providing operational and business development support.
Winnie holds a B.S. in Finance from the University of Adelaide in Australia.
Derrick Hsiang focuses on identifying, evaluating, investing and supporting WI Harper's investments in the software & services, mobile, internet and digital media space. Derrick is actively involved with numerous portfolio companies including Quixey, a leading B2B functional search engine tailored for apps, Maxthon, the world’s #5 internet browser, and Innovation Works, a leading business creation platform led by Dr. Kai-Fu Lee. Derrick gained valuable operating experience at Advanced Semiconductor Engineering, the world's largest IC packaging and test manufacturer, where he managed regional production and focused on business development initiatives. Prior to ASE, Derrick was at Merrill Lynch's Private Banking and Investment Group.
Derrick holds a B.S. in Business Management from the University of Arizona. Derrick serves on the venture capital group of the Asia America MultiTechnology Association and is a co-chair and advisor to the AAMA Connect Conference.
Vincent Gao focuses on investments in the Telecom, Media and Technology (TMT) space. Prior to joining WI Harper, he worked as an associate at Tuspark Holding Co., Ltd, where he was responsible for TMT and Clean Tech investments. Vincent has over 7 years of experience in the high technology industry, direct investment, and startups.
Prior to Tuspark, Vincent worked as a tech manager at Cisco Systems Company, where his responsibility is managing the tech team to solve customer’s technical problems.
Vincent holds an MBA degree from Tsinghua University and a B.E. from Shanghai Jiao Tong University.
Lee Chang focuses on investments in the Telecom, Media and Technology (TMT) space, with high interest in IoT, hardware, mobile and consumer services. Prior to joining WI Harper, he worked as an investment specialist in the Executive Office Strategic Investment Department at Foxconn Technology Group (aka Hon Hai Precision), focusing on Foxconn’s global strategic investment strategy, deal sourcing and execution, and portfolio management.
Prior to Foxconn, Lee held positions at Xiaomi, Vimax and Global Trax driving international business development and strategy. Lee started his own online marketing business while in college and played poker professionally.
Lee graduated from the International MBA Program co-developed by the MIT Sloan School of Management and Tsinghua University’s School of Economics and Management in Beijing and holds a B.A. from the University of California San Diego.
Kelvin is focused on investment in Telecom, Media and Technology (TMT) Sector. He is actively involved in identifying and evaluating investment in Mobile Internet, IOE, and software/hardware integration space. Prior to WI Harper, Kelvin was responsible for leading Global Business Development and Technical Marketing for Cloud-Computing startups, overseeing and creating new business opportunities. Kelvin also had more than 10 years of experience in Semi-conductor, Mobile platform and Telecom industry during his career in Ericsson and varies projects from Enterprise ERP, IT consulting to city-wise Taipei WiFi deployment and other new technologies.
Kelvin received his bachelor degree in Information Technology specialized in Management Information System from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute.
Lee Hsieh focuses on investments in the broader TMT industry, with particular interests in Digital Health as well as mobile technologies and applications. Prior to joining WI Harper, Lee was leading Strategy and Business Planning for NeuroSky, a venture-backed company developing advanced biosensors and applications for wearable devices, targeting digital health and wellness applications.
Before NeuroSky he spent several years in the investment banking industry with Morgan Stanley and Nomura in the Greater China region and Japan, focusing primarily on the TMT industries.
Lee holds a MBA degree from The Wharton School of University of Pennsylvania, Masters of Science degree in Information Networking from Carnegie Mellon University, and Bachelor degree in Telecommunications Engineering from National Chiao Tung University in Taiwan
Benjamin Hu focuses on investments in both Healthcare and TMT out of the San Francisco office.
Prior to joining WIH, Benjamin worked as an Assistant Analyst for the Strategic Index Management Series (SIMS), contributing to research used to make tactical decisions for the portfolio's $30 million in assets under management. Prior to SIMS, Benjamin interned for the California State Assembly and worked in basic science research at Stanford University.
Benjamin holds a B.S. in Genetics and in Bioengineering Technologies from Cornell University. He also studied for three years in the MD/PhD program at UC San Diego.
Earl Yu focuses on investments in Telecom, Media and Technology (TMT) Sector in China,with high interest in Enterprise services, Big data, IoT and Fintech.
Prior to joining WI Harper, Earl worked as an assistant manager in China Unicom for 7 years, managing the tech team and sales team. In addition, he worked at Hong Yuan Securities Company Limited (HYSEC) where he participated in NEEQ projects and bonds projects in TMT sapce. And also interned for State Development & Investment Corporation Fund (SDIC fund).
Earl holds M.B.A. degree from Guanghua School of Management in Peking University, a B.E from Southwestern University of Finance and Economics and minor in Finance.
Phoebe Wang focuses on investments in the Telecom, Media and Technology(TMT) space.
Prior to joining WI Harper, she worked as a manager on product, marketing, operation at Kingsoft Co., Ltd, where she was responsible for online game and strategy, and published many kinds of online games, have many years of experience in project operation and startup.
Phoebe holds an MBA degree from Tsinghua University and a B.E. from Dalian Maritime University.
